Sunday morning into Monday will be hectic on El Paso westside roadways
Traffic congestion along Mesa Street is expected due to Interstate 10 closing, according to Texas Department of Transportation officials.
The closure for both the eastbound and westbound directions from Sunland Park Exit to Executive Center Overpass will go into effect Sunday. The eastbound lanes will close at 3 a.m. and the westbound lanes will close at 9 p.m. Sunday.
TxDOT officials say motorists will have to travel on Mesa Street to commute in the Westside.
The interstate will reopen to motorists at 5 a.m. Monday.
During that time there will be 27 officers assigned to assist with traffic control along the stretch of Mesa between Sunland Park and Executive.
"Oh that'll be better," said Andres Camposino, who drives from the east side to the west side. "It could eliminate all the road rage. And keep traffic flowing."
Intersecting streets near Mesa Street are expected to affected as well.
Doniphan Drive is also expected to be affected. The public is being asked to plan accordingly and avoid driving if unnecessary during the closure.
Officials say the 26-hour closure is necessary while crews demolish the westbound Paisano Drive (US 85) Bridge over I-10. In addition to demolition, crews will also be setting beams, repairing potholes on I-10, and working on a nearby culvert.
