DWI suspect damages power lines, cause roadway closure in Las Cruces, say police
A suspected DWI driver caused havoc on a busy roadway in Las Cruces Friday morning, according to police.
Utility crews are working to fix downed power lines along Rinconada Boulevard that were brought down by an early Friday morning crash, Las Cruces police said.
Police said the crash forced the closure between Bataan Memorial West and Northrise Drive for most of Friday.
The eastbound off-ramp from Highway 70 at Rinconada will also be closed for most of Friday, police said.
A vehicle crashed into a utility pole around 3 a.m., which caused the power lines to droop over the roadway, said police.
El Paso Electric crews expect the repairs to last most of Friday and, for safety purposes, the affected portion of Rinconada must be closed to traffic.
Police said 20-year-old Destiny Sanchez caused the crash and was not injured. Sanchez was arrested on suspicion of DWI.
Motorists who must travel in the area are asked to reduce speeds and watch for traffic barriers and utility crews.
