Riverside greats remembered on sports facilities
A few sports greats from Riverside High School are etched into history.
Jim Forbes, a former All-American for Bel Air High School in 1970 will have the gymnasium named after him. In 1995, Forbes led the Rangers to their first Region Championship and earned the first Texas State Final Four appearance in school history. As an athletes, he was a standout at UTEP and played in the 1972 U.S. Olympic Basketball team with assistant coach by Don Haskins.
The football stadium will honor Head Coach Tom Work, who complied over 130 wins in 15 years, including 2 Area Championships.
The baseball field will be named the Jim Melendez Field at the Yard. Melendez appeared in 28 state playoffs and won 8 Area Championships.
