C-USA review of UTEP buzzer beater determined the clock did not start on time
EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14) —
UTEP's men's basketball team prevailed over Rice in dramatic fashion Saturday when freshman guard Jordan Lathon beat the buzzer with an 18-foot jumper to defeat the Owls 65-64.
Rice Athletics later filed an official inquiry with Conference USA believing the clock should have run out.
After review, C-USA determined the clock did not start at the proper time at the end of the game. C-USA will not be overturning the end result, however, according to a C-USA official.
C-USA Commissioner Judy MacLeod released the following statement regarding the game:
Following our comprehensive review with additional video of the conclusion of the January 12th Rice at UTEP men’s basketball game, we determined the clock did not start on time. It was a hard-fought game with many close plays that culminated in a great shot by each team in the final seconds. All video replay processes will be reviewed to ensure the best possible information is available to our officials on site.
