LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The UTEP softball team (2-7) fell in the final game of the Boyd Gaming Rebel Classic, 5-2, at UNLV (9-1) Sunday. Kira McKechnie pitched 6.0 innings with five strikeouts on the day.
The Miners began the top of the first frame by seeing Kasey Flores extend her hitting streak to eight games with a single to right field. UTEP failed to bring her in, but stayed knotted up, 0-0, after McKechnie went three-up, three-down with two strikeouts to begin her day.
UNLV, in the bottom of the second inning, posted a run to take the lead, 1-0. It added two more in the fourth inning, 3-0, earning some breathing in the game.
The Miners cut into the lead when Pate Cathey recorded the first extra-base hit of her career to score Cortney Smith in the top of the sixth inning, 3-1.
The Rebels posted two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, 5-1. Flores brought in a run on a fielder’s choice in the top of the seventh frame, and then with the bases loaded and two outs Ilena Santos came to the plate but failed to reach base, ending the game, 5-2.

UTEP Softball will travel to Davis, Calif., to participate in the UC Davis Tournament (Feb. 21-23). The Miners will begin the tournament versus host-school UC Davis on Thursday (1 p.m. MT).
