Woman accused of hurting 3 police officers during welfare check

Police arrested a woman they say hurt three officers who were conducting a welfare check at a gas station late Saturday night in Las Cruces, according to the Las Cruces Police Department.

Officers were dispatched to to a Valero gas station on the 3100 block of N. Main St. for a welfare check on a woman, identified as 31-year-old Candy Luna Santana, who was sleeping near the entrance.

When officers arrived they found Santana alseep.

Officers woke Santana up to make sure she was OK. Santana then became angry and grabbed one of the officers around the neck, scratching him and spitting at his face, according to Dan Trujillo, spokesperson for the Las Cruces Police Department.

Officers attempted to take Santana into custody but then Santana kicked a sergeant and butt-headed the third officer.

The officers were not seriously injured.

Santana was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where she is being held without bond.

Santana is being charged with four counts of battery to a peace officer. The charges are all fourth-degree felony counts.
