Witnesses take the stand in EPISD cheating scandal case

Several people have now testified in the trial of five former El Paso Independent School District administrators accused of taking park in a cheating scheme.

Those accused of defrauding the system by manipulating test scores are former EPISD Superintendent James Anderson, former Austin High School Principal John Tanner, and former Austin High School Assistant Principals Nancy Love, Mark Tegmeyer and Diane Thomas.

During Tuesday’s court session, a member of the Department of Education and a former member of the FBI who worked for Weaver, a firm that investigated several EPISD schools.

During testimony, prosecutors brought up a letter former Sen. Eliot Shapleigh wrote to the DOE in 2009.

Jurors were not told what was written in that letter, but the member of the DOE testified that he started

looking into Bowie High School after receiving it.

Testimony is expected to continue Wednesday.
