EL PASO, Texas — Cars going through West El Paso may experience heavier traffic while taking detours around the I-10 closures expected Sunday.
The highway will be closed eastbound from Redd Road to Sunland Park Drive. Drivers will have to detour through Donaphin. South Desert Boulevard frontage road will also be closed between Redd Road and Thorn Avenue. The underpass on Mesa and I-10 will be closed as well.
Residents in the area are all too familiar with the congestion these detours create.
“It seems to be one of the major topics of discussion,” Jerry Jarvis said.
Jarvis, president of the Mesa Hills Neighborhood Association, said TxDOT’s GO-10 project is frequently brought up at meetings.
“There are some grumblings from people from time to time,” Jarvis said.
George Abraham is a resident of the area.
“It's been a really big inconvenience,” Abraham said. “I plan on not going anywhere those days but if you have to leave, you have to plan with a lot more time.”
While the construction has been a struggle for some, Jarvis said the majority of his residents understand the need for it.
“For the most part, I think people realize what a great project TxDOT has done for El Paso highways,” Jarvis said.
For now, Abraham focuses on the end product.
“I'm looking forward to when it's done,” Abraham said. “It'll be nice to have more lanes on I-10.”
The closure will continue for 27 hours, finishing at 6 a.m. Monday.
