UTEP holding forum to discuss potential tuition increase

You can join the tuition increase discussion on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

UTEP will host a forum Tuesday morning to discuss a potential tuition increase.

The university says an increase would be used to offer more classes, recruit high-quality faculty members and offer more financial aid resources.

According to the UTEP website, the U.S. Department of Education says the university has the lowest net cost for any public research institute on the country. Tuition for the 2016-17 school year was just $7,348.

Every two years, the university submits a request to determine tuition for the following two academic years; an increase starting in Fall 2018 would last through Summer 2020.

A committee made up primarily of UTEP students will make the requests.

To remain transparent about the potential increase, the committee will hear recommendations Tuesday afternoon.

The community can attend the forum at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in UTEP’s Union Building East, in room 312.

They’ll hear recommendations and answer questions at the meeting.

There is no number on the potential increase. UTEP must submit a proposal by December 4th.
