UTEP's president and new athletics director are addressing the media about the university's new “vision” for its Sun Bowl venue.

The renovation at the Sun Bowl includes premium seating, a party deck, terrace and new elevators on the westside of the stadium, said AD Jim Senter.

Located directly beneath the new press box, the terrace will have club seats, loge boxes and outdoor cantinas. It'll be a place for families to gather, said UTEP officials.

The project also includes a renovated concourse with modernized fan amenities, restrooms and ADA capabilities.

Senter said work to renovate the Sun Bowl will happen immediately.

He says they expect the project to be completed by Sept. 1, 2019

Football fans this season will see the updated concourse, said Senter.

“When everyone comes back this fall to our opening game against NIU you’re going to walk into this place and say, “Wow, this is different!””

UTEP is partnering with GECU on this $10 to $15 million project.

“The planned renovation of Sun Bowl Stadium is a key step in our continued campus transformation that enhances the overall experience of our students, faculty, staff and visitors,” President Natalicio said. “We are grateful for the collaboration and support of our longtime community partner GECU as we begin modernizing this iconic facility that serves not only the UTEP campus but the entire region.”

Senter has hosted multiple town halls across El Paso to receive input from the public about the athletics program.

Many Miners fans have credited the attendance decline at sporting events to rule changes that went into effect.
