UPDATE: 18-year-old who suffered traumatic brain injury in fight released from hospital

EL PASO, Texas - An 18-year-old man who suffered traumatic brain injuries as a result of a fight was released from the hospital Friday, according to his family.

Gabe Benavidez was injured in a fight last weekend. Dona Ana sherriff's deputies arrested Deric Edward Joyce, 22, in connection to Benavidez's beating.

Kelly Jameson, a spokesperson with the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office, confirmed Joyce is a Fort Bliss soldier.

Detectives received a video that shows Joyce throwing Benavidez to the floor and then kicking him in the face.

Benavidez had to be airlifted to University Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. He suffered bleeding and tears to the brain, fractures to the sinus and orbital cavities, and a broken jaw, detectives said.

A second video shows Joyce involved in a different altercation the same night.

Benavidez's family said he will be treated at a rehab center in Las Cruces.

Joyce was charged with aggravated battery, battery and public affray. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 cash bond. He entered a not guilty plea during an arraignment Friday, according to the Dona Ana Sheriff's Office.
