Traffic lanes on Airway Blvd. near airport will close for new art work

A new art piece will light up the roadway near the El Paso International Airport.

Crews will install the new public art piece that is going up on Airway Boulevard between Boeing Drive and Convair Road.

“El Paso Passage,” by artist Bill FitzGibbons, will be a lighted art piece located beneath the overpass and is part of the airport’s overall Landscape Improvement Project on the remainder of the project is expected to commence in late summer.

The process of putting up the display will cause the northbound lanes on Airway Boulevard between Boeing Drive and Convair Road to temporarily close.

The closure will begin Monday and will be in effect until July 20. The closure is scheduled to happen between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m.

Proper traffic control measures and signage, including digital message boards, will be in place throughout the closures. Detours and closure schedules may be slightly modified to allow for unforeseen events or weather conditions.

This $205,000 project is part of the City of El Paso’s commitment to promote the visual image of the city and is funded through the Airport Enterprise Fund.
