EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14) — Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center of El Paso received volunteer help Thursday to kick off Nurses Week.
Organizations from El Paso Electric, Lone Star Title and State Farm helped hand out lunch to students, faculty and nurses at the school.
The Hunt School of Nursing opened its doors at Texas Tech 10 years ago with 38 future health care heroes.
More than 800 students have graduated from the school since.
The celebration was also to congratulate the school on its 10-year anniversary.
Nurses from Texas Tech and University Medical Center were invited to the celebration.
“I think the need for nurses has always been there. They are more needed now because of the pandemic. The mandatory need is way up for nurses right now in El Paso,” Arturo Villalobos, a nurse at University Medical Center said.
El Paso Electric also presented the school with a $45,000 gift to continue nursing programs at the school.

Officials with the Hunt School of Nursing said they constantly try to combat the critical shortage of nurses in the Paso del Norte region.
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center says 75 percent of students who graduate from the Hunt School of Nursing are El Paso natives, with a vast majority of those graduates staying here in the region.
