Teen boy shot and killed on Dale Road was a cancer survivor, family says

Jay Diaz was shot and killed on Dale Road.

The family of the teen boy who was shot and killed Tuesday says he was a cancer survivor.

Police say Miguel Angel Herrera-Chico was “recklessly” trying to clear a malfunction in a shotgun when 15-year-old Jay Diaz was shot in the chest.

Claudia Nunez, Jay’s family member, told KFOX14’s Ashley Claster the whole family is devastated after finding out about his death.

“Jay will be truly missed. He was a wonderful little boy. I’ve had the privilege to know him since he was a baby and Jay was a very happy kid,” Nunez said.

Those close to him say he was a friendly, popular teen who lived for his family.

“Family was his main priority,” Nunez said.

Police say Jay was shot in the chest in a home on Dale Road.

“Such a tragedy, words can’t express our loss. I don’t think we can overcome this accident,” Nunez said.

Jay’s picture shines in a banner above Providence Hospital. He had battled and won a battle with cancer.

“He had two chances in life. He was in remission. Cancer remission. He was in remission and was doing a lot better, and for this to happen?” Nunez said.

Now his family is left with one option.

“What we can do is just be together as a family and try to overcome this situation. An unfortunate situation. Such a young boy lost to soon.” Nunez said.

Herrera-Chico was charged with manslaughter. He was jailed on a $50,000 bond.
