State of Texas asks people to stop donating unsolicited items for hurricane victims

The El Paso Salvation Army collected donations for potential Harvey evacuees coming to the Sun City.

People are being asked not donate any more items for southeast Texas communities.

The overwhelming response from people in donating items for hurricane victims has been greatly appreciated but the items received exceeds the needs of the impacted communities, El Paso city officials said in a statement.

The State of Texas is asking that people not donate items such as clothing, miscellaneous household items, medicine, or perishable foods at this time.

The large quantities of unsolicited donations require agencies to redirect staff and volunteers to sort, package, transport and distribute the items, which may not meet the needs of disaster survivors, the city said.
