EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — The El Paso County Sheriff's Office released the name of the driver and passenger of the car that drove towards law enforcement and struck a marked New Mexico State Police vehicle that resulted in an officer-involved shooting.
The male driver was identified as 44-year-old Apolinar Lozano III.
The passenger has been identified as 43-year-old Igancio Sandoval.
On Friday the Las Cruces Police Department responded to a stolen vehicle call driven by two men according to a statement released by the Sheriff's office.
The statement says the stolen car was seen on Interstate-10 headed toward Texas.
Shortly after the car was found by law enforcement in unmarked police cars.
The officers requested assistance from other New Mexico and Texas law enforcement agencies near their location by the Texas State Line.
The stolen car was followed into the parking lot of Love's Truck Stop located at 3000 Mountain Pass Boulevard in Anthony, Texas.
When the police vehicles arrived on the scene the driver of the stolen vehicle attempted to drive away by trying to drive through the police units and then hitting one.
The car then accelerated in an attempt to drive through the police cars and accelerated toward officers from the Anthony Police Department.
It was at this point an officer from the New Mexico State Police fired shots and struck Lozano.
Lozano later died from his injuries.
Sandoval was not injured and was taken into custody for outstanding criminal warrants and charges stemming from the incident.
The names of the officers involved will not be released by El Paso County the statement said.
The stolen vehicle is a Dodge Challenger that was reported stolen in January out of Las Cruces.
Ignacio Sandoval was booked into the El Paso County Jail for Unauthorized Use of A Motor Vehicle ($41,000.00 bond) and Possession of Controlled Substance PG 1 ($41,000.00 bond).
