Victim shares story of how she escaped masked man in backseat

Car robber at night

Las Cruces Police are looking for a suspect who, they said, wore a mask and hid in the back seat of a woman’s SUV.

On the morning of May 6; at a home in the Sonoma Ranch area, a 28-year old woman was pulling out of her garage on her way to work when a masked man appeared from behind her seat and threatened her with a knife, police said.

“All he kept telling me was, 'Keep driving or I’ll stab you,'” the woman said.

KFOX14 is not releasing her name.

She said the man in the mask pressed a butcher knife against her neck and forced her to drive toward Mesilla.

“I was terrified. I was thinking about my kids. I have an 8-year-old and a 9-month-old and so I was scared, you know? What was his intention?” she said.

The woman said the man finally told her to stop driving and ordered her out of the car.

As he was getting out of the vehicle, she said, she got away and called police.

“We’re not sure how he got into the garage. My family is in the house so it scares me that he got into our house and now he’s still out there and he knows where we live so that’s terrifying to me,” the woman said.

Police are still investigating how and when the man was able to sneak inside the woman’s garage.

Investigators said if you have a garage door opener, never leave it visible in your car.

Police say you should always check your vehicle before getting inside. Then, double-check to make sure no one is hiding in the back seat. Finally, lock your doors.

“These kinds of things really do happen and people need to take those precautions and make sure you’re locking your doors,” the woman said.

So far, no arrests have been made but if you have any information that leads to an arrest, you’re asked to call Las Cruces police at 575-526-0795.
