Police: Intoxicated man attacks wife with lamp after she wakes him to check on him

Levi Benitiz was charged with one count of aggravatedbattery against a household member causing great bodily harm and one count ofaggravated battery against a household member.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KFOX) - A Las Cruces man accused of attacking his wife and hitting her with a lamp was arrested Tuesday.

According to police, Levi Benitiz’s wife twice found him passed out and under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance at their home Tuesday.

The second time she woke Benitiz up to check on him, he allegedly hit her several times with both hands, police said.

Benitiz then grabbed a lamp and used it to hit his wife on the head several times, police said.

The woman suffered several lacerations to her head and one to her right thumb, police said. She was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Benitiz, 41, was arrested at the home of the 300 block of Rio Arriza Loop. He was booked into the county jail where he is initially being held without bond.
