Police: Driver beaten with rock by pedestrian during dispute

Police arrested an 18-year-old Las Cruces man suspected of using a large rock to beat up a motorist Wednesday evening.

Shortly before 6 p.m., police said they responded to the report of a fight near 1061 N. Tornillo St. When they got there, they found a 21-year-old man who was bleeding from his head.

Bryant Keith Williams, 18, was walking along Spruce Avenue when he was confronted by the 21-year-old, who was driving by, police said.

Investigators said that witnesses said the two men exchanged words, and the vehicle pulled over on Tornillo Street.

A woman who was a passenger in the vehicle tried to pull Williams off, but was unable to do so, police said. A passerby also tried to break up the fight, said police.

Williams fled from the scene, but was found and arrested, according to police.

He was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center, where he’s initially being held without bond.

Williams was charged with one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

The man was taken to Mountainview Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
