A pedestrian involved in a crash in northeast El Paso Wednesday morning has died, police said.

It happened before 7 a.m. Wednesday on Stan Roberts Sr. Avenue and McCombs Street.

Police said Maria Aguirre, 47, of Chaparral, New Mexico, was speeding in a 2003 GMC Envoy northbound on McCombs Street.

At that time, a 2016 Nissan Versa was illegally parked on the west shoulder facing north at the intersection of Stan Roberts Sr. Avenue, police said.

The GMC was trying to pass another vehicle on the wet roadway when the driver lost control of the vehicle, police said.

The GMC collided with the Nissan, which then struck Irma Consuelo Melendez Mendoza, who was standing behind the Nissan, police said

Mendoza, a Mexico resident, was taken to University Medical Center, where she died.

Police said failing to control speed and unsafe passing were contributing factors in the crash.
