SOCORRO, Texas (KFOX14) — More than a month after it occurred, investigators revealed what prompted a shooting involving an off-duty Border Patrol agent in Socorro.
The findings of the preliminary investigation into a shooting that occurred Jan. 14 along the 300 Block of Melendez Drive indicate that off-duty Border Patrol Agent Luis Chavez was attacked by Juan Daniel Jacques, 33, according to investigators with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said Chavez was struck multiple times with a metal object.
They said they determined that Chavez fired his duty weapon at Jacques, who died of gunshot wounds.
We interviewed Jacques' wife more than a month ago. Speaking with us Tuesday, she says this is the first time she's heard any updates regarding her husband's death.
"They know how to reach to me. I don't think it's right the fact that I'm going to find this out because of social media or news or things like that," said Paula Herrera.
KFOX14 asked the sheriff’s office if the Jacques family was contacted about the investigation. They said they routinely make such calls, but Herrera insists that she hasn't gotten such a call.
"I would definitely like for them to actually let me know what's going on. Just telling me exactly what's going on, and how they found out, and how the investigation is going and everything. I called them and sometimes I don't get an answer,” Herrera said.
KFOX14 also reached out to the Border Patrol regarding Chavez's work status. A spokesperson said they were not able to comment, leaving the Jacques family with questions, but no answers.
"Everything just looks very skeptical, and the fact that they don’t even call me,” Herrera said.
A spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office said the case has been referred to the District Attorney’s Office for review and any additional action.
