A Las Cruces neighborhood is mourning the loss of an elderly woman after she died in a fire early Saturday morning.

The fire broke out around 7 a.m. at 1180 Circle Drive.

Neighbors identified the woman as Mary who lived on the block most of her life.

“I see the window, how badly its burned and I think ‘oh my gosh, she was in there all this time,’” neighbor Irene Bailey said.

The woman’s next-door neighbors said they saw smoke and called 911.

“We were just banging on the windows and doors and trying to get her attention but there was no response,” Shawnda Luke said.

Bailey said there is no way Mary could have gotten out of the house quickly.

“She was paralyzed,” Bailey said. “She couldn’t get around.”

Other neighbors like Susan Jones also knew Mary for decades.

“When I saw all the fire coming out I said ‘oh my god, I knew who’s house it was,” Jones said. “I knew it was at Mary’s.”
