Mother lands in hospital after son dies in car crash

Jacob Bernaldez, 21, died in a rollover in on I-10 W near Lee Trevino.

A 21-year-old man is dead following a car crash and now his mother is in the hospital.

A rollover in east El Paso killed Jacob Bernaldez on Friday on I-10 west near Lee Trevino Drive.

His two passengers were friends, and they walked away with only scratches.

One of Bernaldez’s friends, Jesus Ramos, said Bernaldez’s mother ended up in the hospital after learning her only child died.

"He was like a brother to me,” Ramos said. "He was a very loving guy."

Ramos said Bernaldez was his best friend.

"I've known Jacob since seventh grade. He was actually my first friend that I really had,” he said.

El Paso Police said Bernaldez was driving a car on I-10 West in East El Paso when the car went off the interstate and rolled.

Bernaldez was ejected.

"It was all a blur,” said Ramos., who was in the car when the crash happened

"I tried opening the door, but they were both jammed,” he said.

Police said they believe speed and alcohol may have played a role in the crash.

Ramos said he doesn’t remember much of it.

"We had some pedestrians, they were trying to get us calm, get us to sit down, asked us if we were okay,” he said. "We heard the ambulance come right away."

Ramos said he and another friend got out of the car and only suffered from a few scratches, but, when he looked over to Bernaldez, he knew his friend was gone.

"We knew that he didn't make it,” he said.

Ramos said when Bernaldez’s mother found out that her only son died in the crash, he said, she couldn’t take it.

"Right now, she's on life support,” he said.

He said she underwent cardiac arrest at just 42-years-old, and now, she’s fighting for her life.

"His mother is very loving,” he said. "She's like my second mother and she would refer to me as her second son, also."

Ramos said all he can do now is stand by her side.

He said this crash was a wake-up call.

"I know that safety is very important, with your seatbelts,” he said. "I believe Jacob wasn't wearing a seatbelt. If he was wearing a seatbelt, I'm pretty sure all three of us would've been here right now."
