About 33 pounds of methamphetamine was found inside the spare tire of a vehicle trying to enter the country from an El Paso border crossing, officials said.

The seizure happened around 6:30 a.m. Monday at the Bridge of the Americas.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said a 1989 GMC Suburban was going under a secondary inspection after officers noted several issues during the primary inspection.

The vehicle was X-ray scanned, and officers later found 14 bundles of methamphetamine hidden in the spare tire, officials said.

“CBP officers are working hard to maintain the free flow of legitimate trade and travel while enforcing the laws of our nation,” said Beverly Good, CBP El Paso port director. “Every day CBP officers are identifying and stopping illegal activity at our ports of entry."

The driver, a 49-year-old man from Mexico, was turned over to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office to face charges.
