LAS CRUCES, N.M. — An 18-year-old man faces multiple charges after he was shot by a man he attacked during a home invasion robbery, police said.
Diego Vallejo, 18, and four other men went to a home on the 300 block of Keathley Drive on Oct. 26 with the intent of breaking into it and stealing property, police said.
Vallejo had a hatchet while another person was carrying a bayonet-style knife, police said.
The group kicked in the front door and attacked a 37-year-old man who lived here. The victim was stabbed several times before he grabbed a handgun, police said.
The victim fired at least one round that struck Vallejo’s right leg, police said.
Two people ran to a gray vehicle, while the other two tried to help Vallejo escape. Police said they left him in the driveway, got into the gray vehicle and left the scene, police said.
The victim was taken to MountainView Regional Medical Center for treatment, and Vallejo was taken to Memorial Medical Center before being airlifted to University Medical Center in El Paso.
Vallejo was released from the hospital and faces one count each of aggravated burglary, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, conspiracy and criminal damage to property.
His bond has been preset at $50,000 cash-only.
Police are trying to identify the remaining four people involved in the home invasion. Anyone with information on their identities is asked to call police at 575-526-0795.
