Man, 18, faces negligent homicide charge in March shooting death of 16-year-old girl

Gabriela Pitones was shot and killed at a south central El Paso home while she and another teen were handling a gun, police said.

An 18-year-old man now faces a criminal negligent homicide charge in the shooting death of a 16-year-old girl.

At the time, police said the girl and Victory Lago, 18, were in possession of a firearm, and Gabriela Pitones was shot while the two were handling the weapon.

She died on March 22.

Pitones’ mother spoke to KFOX14 earlier this year about the incident.

"We got a text message from one of their friends telling us that they were drinking at that house where she died," said Denise Ochoa.

Ochoa said she didn’t find out about the incident until 12 hours later, and it was by a text message from one of her daughter’s friends.

At the time, Lago was arrested for an unrelated, outstanding aggravated robbery case.

Lago was rebooked into the county jail on Friday on the criminal negligent homicide charge with bail set at $200,000.

Police said other charges are anticipated and Lago’s mugshot will not be released at this time so that it wouldn’t hinder other investigations.
