L&J Cafe named finalist for Best Tex-Mex in Texas

L&J Cafe has been around since 1927 in central El Paso.

An El Paso restaurant that has been around nearly 90 years has been nominated for an award for its menu.

At this time, L&J Cafe is ranked No. 5 as a finalist for one of the best Tex-Mex restaurants in Texas.

USA Today’s Reader’s Choice compiled a list of the top 10 Tex-Mex restaurants in the state, and L&J Cafe made the list.

The list includes Mexican restaurants and Tex-Mex restaurants from all over Texas.

The other restaurants in the top five are Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ and Matt’s El Rancho in Austin, Joe T. Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant in Fort Worth, and El Manantial in Amarillo. L&J Cafe is the only El Paso restaurant on the list. Other cities with restaurants that made the list are Houston, San Antonio and Grapevine. Tacodeli and Torchy’s Tacos are both statewide chains that made the list at No. 7 and No. 10, respectively.

“This recent nomination by USA Today as a finalist in the Top Ten Reader’s Choice for 2018 regarding best Mexican food is quite a privilege, quite an honor, as there are many great restaurants in the state of Texas. But to be picked out as one possible, for the whole state of Texas, it’s terrific,” said Leo Duran, president of L&J Cafe.

Duran also said that he thinks the nomination is good for the reputation of the El Paso community.

“It’s really not an accolade for L&J. I think it’s for the community that supports L&J as well,” said Duran.

According to Duran, his maternal grandparents, Antonio and Juanita Flores, opened the cafe in 1927, calling it Tony’s Place. Duran said his parents, John and Lilia Duran, took over the family business in 1968 and used their own initials, changing the name to L&J Cafe. Duran and his wife, Francis, took the reins in 2003. Now, the cafe is in its fourth generation of ownership, with Duran’s daughter Vanessa running the restaurant.

There are still 20 days left to vote. Duran encourages the people of El Paso to vote for his restaurant, which is best-known for its chile con queso, shredded beef tacos and fajitas.
