EL PASO, Texas (KFOX) — The Salvation Army Las Cruces Corps and the Las Cruces Cruising Council are partnering up to provide toys to underprivileged kids.
The two organizations held a “toy cruise” today with several car groups in the city.
They started at the Kmart on Memorial and cruised to Rudy’s BBQ on Telshor Boulevard.
A spokesperson for the Salvation Army says 150 to 200 cars showed up to the event.
While doubling as a car show of sorts, the event's purpose was collecting toys for children.
The Salvation Army Las Cruces Corps says they actually serve all of Doña Ana County and that approximately 1,000 children have already signed up to receive toys.
“Every year, the need gets greater,” said Capt. Michael Evans.
Evans explained that the goal of the event is to make sure every child gets a Christmas.
“We sit back and we think about our childhoods, where you wake up on Christmas morning and you run and you rip open presents under the tree, and the excitement and the fun you get from that,” Evans said. “There's a lot of kids in this county that when they get up on Christmas morning, they're gonna run over there and there's nothing there."
Evans said they believe families should not have to choose between paying their rent and buying Christmas presents.
