Las Cruces newlywed husband allegedly beats wife when leaving hospital, police say

A Las Cruces man was arrested on suspicion of beating his wife early Monday morning, shortly after being released from a hospital, police said.

Police said Angel Tovar, 35, is being charged with a third-degree felony count of aggravated battery against a household member and misdemeanor count of battery.

Tovar and his wife got into an argument and Tovar had to be hospitalized, according to police.

Investigators said Tovar was discharged from the hospital around 2 a.m. and the two resumed their argument,and that’s when Tovar allegedly punched his wife while she drove him home.

Tovar continued to physically beat his wife when they got home, police said.

Investigators said he forced his wife into the master bedroom where he straddled her, choked her with his left hand and repeatedly punched her with his right hand.

The woman was finally able to stop the assault when she punched him and taken to the hospital to be treated for her injuries.

The couple has been married since October.

Tovar was arrested on a warrant Monday evening and is initially being held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
