Las Cruces' Miss New Mexico, Taylor Rey, prepares to compete for the Miss America title
A young woman from Las Cruces is making her dream a reality as she prepares to head to Atlantic City where she will be competing for the Miss America crown.
Many food trucks in Las Cruces are here to help Miss New Mexico’s Taylor Rey fundraise for scholarships before her trip to Atlantic City, where she will compete for the Miss America 2017 title.
The love for musical theater started for Rey when she was 3-years-old here in Las Cruces.
When she reached high school, Rey performed her first lead role as Audrey in the Little Shop of Horrors at the Rio Grande Theater.
“I got to be on that stage and have the microphone and perform for an audience and it sort of awoke that dream in me and made me feel like this is what I want to continue doing,” Rey said.
Rey developed her skills as an actress and went on to perform on Broadway as an ensemble member and back up singer in Kristin Chenoweth’s “My Love Letter To Broadway.”
“It was hours and hours of practice and rehearsal and just dreaming and hoping and preparing but ultimately it ended up working out for me, and so I want to continue that message that with hard work you can get where you’re trying to go,” Rey said.
Rey recently graduated with her bachelor’s degree in musical theater at Oklahoma City University.
She says she wants to continue performing and ensuring that kids enjoy their right to an arts education.
“I want to be remembered as someone who gave back and who really spread my platform and who help inspire children to pursue their career in the arts and who helped keep the arts community thriving,” Rey said.
There was a dinner fundraiser Sunday night held at La Placita in Plaza De Las Cruces to help raise money for scholarships for the Miss New Mexico Pageant.
Rey is going on to compete for her shot at the crown for Miss America on Sept. 10 in Atlantic City.
