Sunland Park Dr. flyover opens; I-10 closures to bring more traffic

Drivers in west El Paso may want to find another route starting Monday.

A 27-hour closure on Sunland Park Drive from Mesa Hills Drive to Doniphan Drive ended at 6 a.m. Monday. When the closure is lifted, the Texas Department of Transportation opened the new Sunland Park Drive flyover to get on I-10 east.

TxDOT expects the demolition and reconstruction of the Sunland Park Drive overpass to take up to six months. Starting April 30, drivers will be diverted onto a newly constructed three-lane turnaround bridge.

Sunland Park Drive overpass has been altered. TxDOT says drivers will notice reconfigured lane geometry, less lanes, more congestion. It’s expected to last for several months while crews build the improved overpass.

After construction, the new overpass will have increased clearance height and additional lanes, according to TxDOT.

Drivers told KFOX14 they expect the traffic to get worse with the new construction.

“It’s annoying and endless. Maybe one day when the project is done it’ll be better, but right now it’s terrible,” John Ruthardt said.
