Government releases new tool to try and lower rejection of citizenship applications

The Online Fee Calculator aims to make the application process easier for things like applying for citizenship, temporary protected status, or reapplying to the U.S. after deportation.

The United States Immigration Services is releasing an online tool to try and lower the number of citizenship applications that are rejected each year.

The Online Fee Calculator aims to make the application process easier for things like applying for citizenship, temporary protected status, or reapplying to the U.S. after deportation.

The online tool helps calculate the correct fee associated with the correct forms to immigration services.

Users select which form they need from a drop-down menu. Options include applying for DACA, an alien fiancé, or a permanent resident card.

After a series of questions, the tool calculates the exact fee amount the user needs to include with their forms, so that they’re not rejected.

Immigration services says in 2017, they processed more than 11 million applications and fee issues are consistently a leading cause of rejection.

Fernanando Vasquez of El Paso is hopeful.

“It’s a step forward,” says Vasquez, “but the government should work more to actually introduce it to them and teach them how to use it.”

Vasquez continues, “Forms here in the U.S. are different from over there, especially like ones that come from the government.”

He says, “It’s a tool, but do they know how to use it?”

Immigration services says the tool does not collect user data and will always have the most up-to-date fee information.

Users can access the tool here.
