GO-10 project closures and traffic delays in West El Paso
A section of I-10 in West El Paso was shut down for 27 hours.
As you might imagine, that created some traffic tie-ups on what is otherwise a quiet day on local streets.
The closure is part of the massive GO-10 Project that will essentially reshape the way we get around on the west side of town.
But the promise of a much brighter future doesn’t necessarily mean drivers were taking it all in stride.
On Sunday, El Paso driver Adrian Stiefer said the construction caused him to break down in the middle of traffic.
"For the next three days, I'm going to avoid the I-10 as much as I can,” Stiefer said.
From 3 a.m. until 6 a.m. Sunday morning, I-10 eastbound was completely closed between North Mesa Street and Sunland Park Drive, as crews demolished the old Resler Flyover ramp.
"Unfortunately with the roads being closed and lanes being closed, we're gonna have to take a detour to get to work earlier, try to wake up earlier,” Samuel Pedroza said.
Drivers can expect the same delays Monday night as the right lane on I-10 headed eastbound from North Mesa Street to Sunland Park Drive will be closed from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
Today many drivers grew impatient waiting in traffic on I-10, some cutting out of line to avoid the delays, and others even breaking down.
"I was at a rest for so long, my car battery died because of it. Because I wasn’t able to give it gas, I wasn't even able to go over fifteen, you know?" Stiefer said.
The construction is all part of the $158 million GO-10 Project.
The project will improve traffic flow and enhance safety on I-10 between Executive Center Boulevard and North Mesa Street Exits.
But some drivers say that during construction, people need to be more courteous to other drivers when stuck in traffic.
"It's tough because sometimes there will be cars cutting you off and trying to get in there and it is a very hazardous area. Sometimes you'll get people that brake check you. You should definitely expect a one hour delay,” Pedroza said.
The Go-10 project is expected to be completed in 2019.
