Funeral services, memorial fund set for retired LCPD officer J.R. Stewart

Honor guard at J.R. Stewart's casket

The body of fallen retired Las Cruces Police Officer J.R. Stewart was transported to a funeral home in Las Cruces late Tuesday night.

Law enforcement agencies waited for Stewart’s body to return home as firefighters hung an American flag near the funeral home.

Las Cruces police officers lined up and stood in silent tribute as the casket was carried into the Baca Funeral Home.

His body had been taken to Albuquerque for an autopsy.

Stewart is survived by his wife, Rosie.

He retired from the Las Cruces Police Department in 2014.

Stewart was riding his motorcycle when he was struck by two carjacking suspects during a high-speed chase Monday night.

Services have been set to say goodbye to Stewart who was well-known and loved in the Las Cruces community.


Public visitation from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Baca Funeral Home at 300 E. Boutz Rd.

The Rosary will be held at St. Genevieve Catholic Church at 100 S. Espina St.


The burial mass will be held at 10 a.m. followed by the burial at San Jose Cemetery.

A J.R. Stewart Memorial Fund has been set up at White Sands Federal Credit Union. Cash and check donations can be made in person.
