Family sleeping on inflatable mattress and recliners after government shutdown

A family who moved to Santa Teresa from Tampa, Florida, approximately six weeks ago is feeling the heavy effects of the partial government shutdown.

Martin Washington said his wife was offered a promotion with the Department of Homeland Security while she worked for the Department of Defense, which required her to move to the borderland.

“This [government shutdown] needs to end. My wife feels like she made the biggest mistake of her life taking this job because she was working with DOD before she took this job with Department of Homeland Security,” said Martin.

Martin said his wife has been working for eight or more hours a day, only to return to an unfurnished apartment because the family left the remainder of their belongings in Florida, said Martin.

Their belongings were left in a storage unit, which the family now fears they will not be able to afford, said Martin.

“If this shutdown does not end soon, we stand a chance of losing everything,” said Martin.

The family is sleeping on recliners and an inflatable mattress in the meantime.

President Donald Trump is expected to make an announcement regarding the partial government shutdown and border security on Saturday.
