EL PASO, Texas — Saying it was the right thing to do, a group of superintendents met at the Tornillo Port of Entry on Wednesday to voice their support for children kept in the tent city.
"I think when we discussed it we felt like as leaders in the community, educational leaders, the right thing was to say look, we’re not going to get into this from a political standpoint. We don’t have a political agenda. We don’t aspire to be politicians or elected officials. But from the most fundamental place we believe that it is wrong to separate children from families and loved ones," said Ysleta ISD Superintendent Dr. Xavier De La Torre.
De La Torre said it sickened him to think of how the children in the Tornillo tent city or any other tent city must feel like without their parents.
He hopes their stand brings more awareness.
While the TEA was not involved in today’s event, the superintendent said they did provide some suggestions on ways to help donate money and supplies like coloring books and toiletries to children in these situations.
He said today was a grassroots movement from these local leaders.
Nearly all the major local districts were there, except for EPISD.
