A recent study says El Paso is one of the most dangerous cities in Texas to take a walk.

The study was conducted by Hill Law Firm by analyzing pedestrian crash data from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) from 2012 to 2015.

It says pedestrian fatalities in Texas have steadily increased every year since 2012 and rank El Paso as one of the five most dangerous cities in Texas with a total of 74 pedestrian crashes in the study period.

The study took the information and compiled an interactive map to show the Lone Star State’s most dangerous areas.

In the Borderland, the map shows the intersection of East Father Rahm Avenue and South Oregon Street in downtown El Paso is one of the worst with 22 pedestrian crashes during the study period.

They blame a lack of crosswalks and sidewalks in most neighborhoods, but El Paso is taking steps to fix the issue.

Construction began last week to widen sidewalks and add lighting on Cincinnati Avenue between Stanton and Oregon Street. Earlier this year the Sparks community received sidewalks.

To stay safe, drivers should never pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk, take extra caution in residential areas, and do the same where children may be present.

Pedestrians should avoid dark clothing, walk on a sidewalk when possible, and only cross at crosswalks and intersections.
