EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A new ice cream shop in El Paso is employing teens and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Howdy Homemade, located at 601 N Oregon St., was started by Tom Landis in Dallas in December 2015.
Adam Tirres, program officer for the El Paso Community Foundation, is in charge of running the shop in El Paso.
"We want to provide that opportunity for them to work and take pride in something that they're doing and we've already seen that here," said Tirres.
Employment at the shop has positively impacted individuals outside of work, Tirres added.
"We've already seen the benefits, from some of the parents I've heard stories about how the demeanor has changed or the overall attitude has changed of some of the employees at home has changed," he said.
All the ice cream is homemade in a nearby factory in El Paso.
"We make the ice cream about 100 feet up the street in suite 4. We have a factory where we produce everything and the heroes, or our employees with disabilities, are involved in every aspect of it," said Tirres.
