El Paso gas prices continue to fall, still higher than last year

The average price for gas is $2.27 in El Paso.

Gas prices continue to drop around the Sun City, but they are still higher than last year.

The average price in El Paso hit $2.27 per gallon on Sunday, according to Gas Buddy.

Drivers said even though it's still higher than last year's average of $2.00 per gallon, they remember a time when it was worse.

"Right now, we haven't got anywhere close to where we were in 2006-2007 when it was $3 a gallon. So I'm breathing easy still," driver Andrew Carpio said.

Carpio said he doesn't expect the prices to fall much more.

"We're still in winter, so I'm sure fuel prices will continue to stay high until we get to the spring," he said.

Christmas gas prices around the country are expected to be the highest since 2013, according to Gas Buddy. Gas Buddy projects the national average to hit $2.39 per gallon Dec. 25, still higher than El Paso's average of $2.27 per gallon.

Drivers said they plan where to get gas, as it's less expensive in east El Paso than west El Paso.

"I live on the west side, and I work on the far east side, so it's like every day back and forth driving," driver Mariana Dominguez said. "The east side has cheaper gas, I think. If I can when I'm at work over there, I fill up over there before I head back home."

Gas on the east side is as low as $2.11 per gallon compared to as much as $2.38 per gallon in west El Paso.
