Drivers hit with Mother's Day traffic in west El Paso

Drivers in west El Paso dealt with traffic on Mother's Day.

The traffic troubles continued in west El Paso for the second day in a row. The second weekend of having a 57-hour closure at Sunland Park ends Monday morning.

"It's pretty messed up," driver San Sozer said. "I don't like it."

TxDOT needs the closures to demolish the old Sunland Park flyover bridge. This weekend, crews will demolish 28 steel girders that each weigh more than 100,000 pounds.

Some drivers said they had to change Mother's Day plans to avoid the backup the closure caused.

"Just to get somewhere, you've got to take off an hour earlier," Luis Simental said. "We didn't want to leave because the traffic was so bad."

The closure is scheduled to be lifted Monday at 6 a.m. TxDOT has another 57-hour closure scheduled next weekend at Sunland Park.
