El Paso city leaders approved a new program to provide free bus rides to people who don't have transportation to their COVID-19 vaccine appointment.

“The need to do something like this is very great. Our community has been hit hard by this pandemic, so anything that we can do to assist the citizens of El Paso in terms of COVID-19, is our responsibility as community leaders --- we need to get creative and look for ways to assist,” said El Paso City Representative Claudia Rodriguez.

Rodriguez said people will need to show proof of their vaccine appointments, in the form of a QR code sent via email, in order to use the service.

Sun Metro will be providing the service and no registration is required.

“Our District 6 office has received numerous calls asking for assistance in getting loved ones to their vaccine appointment. Since mass vaccination sites are more centralized, it becomes difficult for my constituents who live further East to get to these appointments that have no transportation or do not qualify for LIFT,” said Rodriguez.

This service will be for those going to University Medical Center of El Paso's vaccine site at the El Paso County Coliseum and the city of El Paso site at the civic center, but will not include the George Perry vaccination site.

“My hope is that with these free bus rides it will allow the community to have peace of mind in knowing they will have transportation to their vaccine appointments,” said Rodriguez.
