An attempt to arrest two men ended up in an hours-long SWAT standoff in Las Cruces.

Dan Trujillo, spokesperson for the Las Cruces Police Department, said officers were trying to arrest two 35-year-old men around 1:30 p.m. Friday.

The men then ran into the home and barricaded themselves.

One person was taken into custody just before 5 p.m.

Tear gas and flash bangs were used to try to get the second suspect out of the house but he did not come out.

Police cleared the scene around 8 p.m.

Valley View Elementary on California Avenue was placed under shelter-in-place but that was lifted after police verified that it was safe for students, staff and parents, according to the Las Cruces Public Schools website.

We have a crew on the scene and will update this article as more becomes available.
