Author of "Coco: A Story about Music, Shoes, and Family" visits El Paso schools
EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14) —
Diana López, author of “Coco: A Story about Music, Shoes, and Family” which was adapted from the Disney-Pixar film "Coco", is in El Paso promoting her books and promoting reading among young students.
López will be visiting several area elementary, middle and high schools on her tour through El Paso.
On Tuesday, during her visit to East Montana Middle School, KFOX14 got the chance to talk to her about what she hopes students get out of her visit.
“One of the things I’m hoping that students take away from these talks is the idea that books are friends. I think sometimes when we are teaching them how to read in school they kind of think of books as a chore and reading as a chore. I want them to fall back in love with reading and see if they can find those books that speak to them and books that relate to their experience, so that they can look at what the characters are going through and use that as a model for decisions they should make or even decisions they shouldn’t make,” López said.
López writes books targeted at middle-grade readers. All of her stories are set in her hometowns of Corpus Christi and San Antonio. López says a lot of students in those areas are Latino, so a lot of her characters are Latino and a lot of Latino culture is part of that world.
“I’m a firm believer in providing culturally relevant books to our young readers, because when you see yourself reflected in a book it gives you the knowledge that your story is worthy, that your life experience is something that is worth a good book,” López said.
“At the end of the day, I think (it’s about) understanding that your experience and being true to yourself is the way to go. I think that’s what my characters discover and I hope my readers discover too,” López said.
Outside of her trips to El Paso schools this week, López will be at the Alamo Drafthouse at 250 E Montecillo Boulevard on Friday from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. That event will include a book signing by López, face painting and music, and López’s books will be available for purchase.
On Saturday, López will be at Books Are Gems in east El Paso from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. for a reading.
