EL PASO, Texas — Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan visited El Paso's border on Saturday.
Shanahan met with officials in the Border Patrol's El Paso Sector at a site where the Department of Homeland Security has requested the Pentagon's assistance to combat drug smuggling.
The Pentagon chief's visit to El Paso comes as he considers how to use military funds should he be directed to help build President Donald Trump's border wall.
The president was able to tap into $2.5 billion of military money after declaring a national emergency at the southern border this week.
The president also has access to $3.6 billion in military construction funds.
Shanahan has the final word on how much money is shifted to the border construction project.
The acting defense secretary will also be looking at other sites where DHS is asking for assistance.
