EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14) — Everyone is doing their best to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, but it’s not always as simple as it sounds.
One 5-year-old El Pasoan is doing his part, with the help mom, to help essential workers.
There’s the saying, “it’s the little things,” and at such a young age, Wilbur Coleman or “Bookie” as those who know him, is showing this really is true.
“OK, who are you going to take it to first?,” asked Wilbur’s mom, Cheree Coleman, as he was loading up his electric toy jeep, to make deliveries.
Wilbur has been going door to door, giving families with essential workers, or those who are more vulnerable to COVID-19, care packages.
“Hello, special delivery!,” said Wilbur, making a delivery.
Coleman said they’ve been doing this since COVID-19 cases started rising in March.
“He [Wilbur] would go down the street to the corner, and he would water the neighbor’s grass every morning. And he would always say, ‘Mama, I think he [our neighbor] needs hand sanitizer,” said Coleman.
Coleman said every morning, starting at about 6 a.m., she goes to buy supplies to package up for neighbors.
It started small, with the mail man,” said Coleman. “And the garbage man,” added Wilbur.
Now, Coleman said it’s been their mission to buy essentials, helping out those who really need it.
“One lady was like, ‘You’re nothing but a hoarder!,’ And I’m like, ‘You don’t even know what I’m doing ma’am,” said Coleman.
Coleman and Wilbur are fulfilling their mission day by day, hoping to spread a little kindness during tough times. Wilbur is giving us all a reason to smile.
Up to this point, Coleman said she’s been doing all of this out of pocket, while taking a break from doing hair, because of COVID-19.
She said people have been reaching out, helping with donation to buy supplies so that they can keep making care packages for those who really need them.
