Las Cruces man accused of pistol-whipping neighbor, firing handgun

Dewitt Powells is accused of pistol-whipping his neighbor and firing a handgun during a fight.

A man is suspected of pistol-whipping a neighbor and firing at least two rounds during a dispute.

Las Cruces police said the incident happened Thursday evening on the 200 block of Avenida de Mesilla.

Police received reports of a man with a gun just before 9 p.m.

Officers learned that Dewitt Powells, 59 was armed with a handgun and went to a neighbor’s home and began arguing with the 20-year-old man.

During the argument, Powells hit the 20-year-old on the head with the handgun, detectives said.

Powells then reportedly fired at least two rounds during the fight.

Police said no one was seriously injured.

Powells was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he is being held without bond, police said.
