KFOX14 Investigates has learned Child Protective Services is now investigating the death of a 4-year-old mauled to death by dogs last week.

CPS told KFOX14 Investigates said it had previously investigated the family of Jacob Brooks.

However, the agency says by law, the specific case information related to Jacob and his parents is confidential.

Police say Jacob was left in an enclosed trampoline in the backyard last Thursday night. It’s unknown how long he was there before the family’s four dogs attacked and killed him.

According to public records, Jacob lived with his two mothers, who are married, and two siblings.

CPS spokesperson Paul Zimmerman said the agency had prior involvement with the family and that the agency investigates allegations of abuse and neglect.

However, CPS, citing its attorneys, would not tell KFOX14 Investigates when the previous investigation occurred, how long it lasted or what the outcome was.

CPS also declined to give KFOX14 Investigates the dates of last contact with the family.

However, Zimmerman said the family was not under investigation at the time of Jacob’s death.

Jacob’s death has now spurred another CPS investigation into the family.

CPS said Jacob’s siblings have been placed with relatives.

“CPS is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death and assessing risk/safety to the surviving siblings. Thus moving forward, our primary concern is the safety and welfare of the surviving siblings who have placed with appropriate relatives,” Zimmerman said.

The El Paso Police Department's Crimes Against Person’s Unit is investigating Jacob’s death.
