Las Cruces man arrested on charges of threatening family with knife
LAS CRUCES, N.M. —
Easter Sunday didn’t go how a family in Las Cruces was initially hoping.
At about 2 p.m., Las Cruces police officers responded to a call at a house on Bellamah Drive to see if everything was alright. Upon their arrival, they arrested 22-year-old Rudy Lucero after his relatives told them that he was threatening them with a large pocket knife. Besides Lucero, there were four relatives at the house, including a 17-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy.
According to police, Lucero and his family were in the living room when he flipped out the knife and started threatening them. Lucero allegedly was upset with them for refusing to invite him to the next family gathering.
Investigators learned the family didn’t call the police right away because they were scared that he might hurt them if they tried. One of the family members secretly texted another member of the family, who wasn’t at the house, telling him to call the police.
No one was hurt, but Lucero is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center without bond. He is charged with two third-degree felony counts of intentional child abuse and one count of aggravated assault against a household member.
