Scoop on Savings: Cheap 4th of July activities

Elephant Butte Lake is a great way to cool down in the hot Borderland heat.

Tuesday is our nation’s birthday, and in this week’s Scoop on Savings, I’ve got some activities you can enjoy that won’t put a dent in your wallet.

Why not grab a group of friends and head up to Elephant Butte Lake in Truth or Consequences? It’s only about a two-hour drive from El Paso, and I just recently went and had so much fun, without dropping a lot of money.

You can rent an economy pontoon for eight to 10 people for half a day for $219. Split that between all of your friends, and you’re looking at spending only about $22 to $27 a person.

Their website says that’s even a savings of 20 percent. And if you want to stay out in the sun longer, there are plenty of beaches at Elephant Butte to go lay out on with your family and friends that won’t cost a dime.

Want to do something more active than a pontoon? Try out paddle boarding for only $20 an hour, plus $10 for each additional hour.

Don’t forget to share your 4th of July celebrations with us via our Burst app. Upload your pictures there, and show us what you’re up to.

If you do go to Elephant Butte Lake, Sports Adventure has a great pizza joint called Paparoni’s Pizzeria at the rental dock, which I totally recommend lake-goers try.
