Scoop on Savings – Back to school supplies

A pile of notebooks for students heading back to school.

In a couple of weeks, almost all schools in El Paso and Las Cruces will be back in session, which means it’s time to get school supplies. The National Retail Federation says back to school spending is expected to hit $83.6 billion across the country.

Families with K through 12 students are expected to spend on average $687. Families with college students will spend an average of $969. But here’s some tips to help you save:

First, Tax-Free Weekend is just around the corner for Texas. New Mexico just had their Tax Free Weekend from August 4 to 6. But in Texas, Tax-Free Weekend is this week, on Aug. 11 to 13.

Shoppers can save about $8 on every $100 spent on school supplies, clothing, footwear or backpacks.

Walmart is a great place to shop for all your back-to-school supplies. The store offers price matching, meaning if you find an identical item that’s advertised cheaper in another store, Walmart will match that price. That can save trips to multiple stores.

Waiting until the last minute isn’t such a bad idea either, when it comes to buying your supplies. Buy the basics, but then ask your teachers if there’s anything you can hold off on. Many stores will start reducing prices as early as a week after school starts, meaning lots of sales in the school supply section.
